WHAT IS DOWN SYNDROME
Down syndrome is a naturally occurring genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Instead of the usual two copies, a person with Down syndrome has three copies, which is why it is also called Trisomy 21. This additional genetic material affects development and results in some common physical characteristics, learning differences, and health considerations. Down syndrome occurs in people of every race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background and is one of the most common chromosomal conditions worldwide.

MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERENT
A diagnosis of Down syndrome is just one part of who someone is. People with Down syndrome are sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, students, employees, athletes, artists, neighbors, and friends. They attend school, participate in their communities, build meaningful relationships, pursue careers, and contribute in countless ways. Like everyone else, they have individual strengths, challenges, and goals. With the right support, opportunities, and high expectations, individuals with Down syndrome continue to achieve more than ever before.
MYTH VS REALITY
Much of what people think they know about Down syndrome is based on outdated information. Medical advances, early intervention, inclusive education, and community support have dramatically improved health outcomes and quality of life. Today, individuals with Down syndrome are living longer, healthier lives and are making meaningful contributions in their schools, workplaces, and communities. Understanding the facts helps replace misconceptions with acceptance and creates opportunities for everyone to belong.

AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY
Understanding Down syndrome begins with recognizing the person before the diagnosis. People with Down syndrome deserve the same opportunities to learn, work, build relationships, and participate fully in their communities as anyone else. By promoting inclusion, challenging misconceptions, and providing education and support, we can create communities where individuals with Down syndrome are valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. Together, we can ensure every person has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
